Disney+ launched in the U.S. on November 12, 2019 and we’ve all been busy reliving our childhoods thanks to the new Disney exclusive streaming service. I grew up watching all of the Disney classics, and as an adult I am a total fangirl for everything Marvel and Star Wars, so signing up for Disney+ wasn’t even a question. Disney rules my world, and I am very okay with that.
Disney+ has many excellent viewing options, but somehow also not enough. It can be overwhelming trying to decide where to start, so here are some personal recommendations to add to your watch list.
The Mandalorian
The first ever live action Star Wars series is a no brainer. If you’re a fan of Star Wars at all, this is pretty much required viewing. It’s stylized like a Western, with a slower paced story about a lone Mandalorian bounty hunter. The music, costumes, and set design are great, and Pedro Pascal excels as the Mandalorian, who as of yet still hasn’t even taken off his helmet.
Float
A Pixar short directed by Fil-Am Bobby Rubio that features the first Filipino-American animated characters about a father and his son who has a special gift. The short is seven minutes long and consists of exactly one line of dialogue that WILL hit you right in the feels.
Gargoyles
An animated series straight out of my childhood about gargoyles that turn to stone by daylight and awaken as warriors who protect modern day New York City by night. The series aired for two seasons in the ’90s, and creator Greg Weisman is campaigning to revive the series with the hashtag #KeepBingingGargoyles!
Lady and the Tramp (2019)
A live action remake of the 1955 animated classic. Although the movie didn’t have as big of a budget as the live action Aladdin or The Lion King, I still found this version to be very charming and entertaining. Featuring the voice talent of Tessa Thompson, Justin Theroux, and Sam Eliot, and starring many very adorable dogs.
Inside Out
A personal favorite of mine and a great watch for whenever you feel like feeling the feels, specifically – Anger, Fear, Joy, Envy, and Sadness. SHAMELESS PLUG: Check out my full review of Inside Out in the Summer 2019 issue of The Sartorial Geek magazine!
Expanding the Universe
For Marvel fans – if you’re ever having a bad day, I recommend watching this 12-minute documentary about the future of Marvel Studios. Get hyped with all the exciting footage of upcoming Marvel properties. There is just so much to look forward to y’all.
Noelle
All of the new and old Christmas movies are coming out of the woodwork and appearing on your list of recommended titles to watch. So if holiday movies are your jam, Noelle is here to satisfy that craving. Starring Anna Kendrick and Bill Hader, don’t pass up on this fun and whimsical Santa-centric holiday comedy.
