Geeks, I am absolutely in love with A Darker Shade of Magic. It’s the first of a trilogy, and it drew me in immediately, so let me get right into what it’s about.

A Darker Shade of Magic is a novel (that is probably between young adult and adult fiction) about Kell, a young man who travels often. Unlike almost everyone he knows, though, Kell doesn’t just travel around, he travels through. Kell visits several different Londons; Grey London, White London, and his home, Red London.

A Darker Shade of Magic

Each London is different, with different amounts of magic.

There is a fourth London that Kell doesn’t visit, known as Black London. In Grey, there is very little magic; any magic there is unnurtured and unknown. Grey London is our London. In Red London, there is balance. People have different amounts of magic, but it is common and not a source of stress. White London, however, has a magic that causes anguish. There is only a certain amount, and it is rare. Those other than the royals are starved for magic. In Black London, magic has taken over. There is no balance; the magic outgrew the people and took over. So when Kell is asked to transport an item that hails from Black London, his interest is piqued.

The stone from Black London reminds me quite a bit of the ring in Lord of the Rings. It calls to those it can use, doesn’t want to be released, and does its darndest to take over. It’s dangerous and has a certain visibility to those who know to look for it.

A Darker Shade of Magic follows Kell as he deals with the stone, a human from Grey London, and the corrupt leaders of White London.

It’s an incredible journey, and I cannot wait to get my hands on the second book to continue the story. If you’re looking to read this, you can pick up a copy at Barnes and Noble, or Amazon. Plus, the final book in the trilogy is also out, coming out in paperback on March 13, 2018.
