It’s officially autumn. It feels like just yesterday I was writing this same post about summer… and yet Haloween is in ten days! (Where did summer go?) But, at least the fall ’18 trends you’ll be seeing plenty of all season aren’t as bizarre as tiny sunglasses and clear PVC purses. In fact, most of them are very wearable (except maybe the enormous outerwear that was all over the F/W ’18 runways– what even is that?)
And the best part about a new season of trends? Finding new ways to add a nerdy flair to them! Here are some easy ways to put your geek chic twist on what’s in style this season!
Pops of Neon
We’ll start with an insanely easy one: neon is all over this season’s color palette.
Geek it up: Plenty of your favorite geeky shops are already carrying pieces in neon hues that you can rock this season, from Jordandené to Elhoffer Design. The best part about this trend, besides it adding a splash of fun to fall tones? There’s a highlighter-inspired shade out there for everyone. Take some time this fall to find yourself the right one.
Shearling Jackets
If you’re anything like me, then waited all summer to break out your trusty denim jacket. This season, you should totally give it both a throwback and an update: shearling trim. A full shearling coat is great for the colder months, but the denim/shearling combo is perfect for that weird warm-to-cold weather transition.
Geek it up: Nerd culture is covering your denim jacket in pins, patches, and buttons. All of my best ones have come from some of my favorite artists, like Jen Bartel, Tuesday Bassen, and ADAMJK.
Plaid for days
I know, I know: plaid is a fall essential and it always will be. But, this trend is so much more than your usual cold-weather flannels. It’s all over, and it features bright yellow hues this time around. Looks familiar, right?
Oh, right.
Geek it up: You can literally live this season in an adorable casual cosplay and nobody will even notice. Cher Horowitz? Hogwarts schoolgirl chic? A mix of both? The sky’s the limit, Sartorial Geeks.
Hair embellishments
Yes, this is yet another trend Janelle Monae was doing way before any of us, but hair embellishments are a big fall ’18 trend. From eclectic bobby pins to hair charms, it’s a fun way to get in on a seasonal hair trend without making any permanent changes to your ‘do.
Geek it up: Opt for some celestial hair charms to live out all your sci-fi character dreams, or just buy one of those rad Stormtrooper-shaped clips listed above.
Jewel-toned lids
Makeup is always the best way to add a pop of color to a wardrobe (especially if you, like myself, own a closet full of black). The jewel-toned eyeliner trend is not only gorgeous, but faster and easier than learning and committing to any fancy eyeshadow looks.
Geek it up: This is the perfect opportunity to support some of your favorite nerdy cosmetic companies! (Or, check them out if you haven’t tried them yet.) Espionage Cosmetics, Shiro Cosmetics, and Geek Chic Cosmetics all sell fandom-themed eyeshadows that can be applied with a damp angled brush for the perfect eyeliner with endless color combos.
