What is Flame Con?
Flame Con was created just three years ago for a lot of reasons, but one core idea brought so many wonderful people together: to be NYC’s first queer comic con… and eventually the world’s largest. A few weeks ago, the Sartorial Geek/Jordandené team went to join in on the fun. After all, the summer issue of our magazine was all about celebrating love in all its beautiful forms!
We spent the weekend of August 18-19 in the ballroom of the Sheraton Hotel in Times Square. We had an amazing time, made so many new friends, and want to share our experience with you. Hopefully, it’ll be enough to convince you to check it out for yourself next year!
LGBTQ+ geeks just might be the best geeks.
Never in my life have I felt more welcomed at a convention. The Flame Con organizers and volunteers were wonderful, of course, and the most attentive I’ve ever seen. It was so obvious they were all so passionate about the event and it made everything that much better. And, somehow, every single attendee I came across was just as pleasant. Just a bunch of like-minded nerds, inclusive, happy, and excited to share their passion for fandom with everyone– my actual dream come true.
The Exhibitors
Jen Bartel! Kickstarter! Goellnerd Pins! Some of the coolest comic creators I’ve ever seen! Your faves at Jordandené! An entire room dedicated to video game tournaments! What better place would there be for shopping, art, and fun?
The Con Game!
For the first time ever, we got to be part of a convention-wide scavenger hunt! Attendees had the option of completing a “task” at every stop in order to fill up their game sheet. Of course, this was the perfect opportunity to get everyone to take photos with our frame, elaborate cosplay and all!
