I bought this book because I read that it had a bit of a Heathers vibe, and that’s totally my jam. But think of it this way; if one of the people Veronica & JD killed had a younger sibling, who wanted to dig to find the truth behind what happened, this would be that story.
Warning; this book contains things that may be triggering to some folks. If that is you, please don’t continue on.
Monica was the younger sister of one of five cheerleaders who died five years ago. Two girls died in a freak car accident, two were murdered, and one (Monica’s sister) killed herself. Since then, there have been no more cheerleaders; it seems to difficult after that year. But Monica knows something was up. She doesn’t think her sister would have killed herself, and when she finds letters to her stepfather (a police officer) saying he needs to connect the dots, she knows the real killer wasn’t caught. And she’ll do anything to find them.
I fell in love with this book immediately. Thomas writes beautifully relatable characters; the popular girls, the quiet ones, boys who can’t stop awkwardly flirting – the whole nine yards. It was incredible. I read it so quickly because I just couldn’t get enough! I’ll definitely be picking up Kara Thomas’ other books.
If you like dark books that are about solving crimes, sneaking past parents, and dealing with regular high school things on top of all that, check out The Cheerleaders. I am floored by how much I loved it, and I’m sure you’ll be a fan as well! You can get a copy wherever books are sold (Target, Walmart, Amazon, Barnes and Noble, etc)!
