The Secret History
by Donna Tartt
If you like Greek myths, Latin, and death, then this book is for you. This group of friends makes the attempt to try and understand the gods. They believe themselves to even be gods. Mortality is for the weak in this novel.
A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man
by James Joyce
This is about the intellectual birth of Stephen Dedalus. In the story, he is meant to represent Joyce’s very own desires. The story is parallel to the myth of Daedalus and Icarus, and what it means to be free.
If We Were Villains
by M.L. Rio
If you liked The Secret History, you must read this book. It’s death, it’s prose, it’s pretentious. It’s Shakespeare, baby.
The Raven Cycle
by Maggie Stiefvater
Without a doubt, one of the best YA series that I have ever read. It is at its core about love. Love for magic, for friends, for a family. For something greater than what we are. Love for things that exist and don’t exist. Most importantly, it’s about love for a friendly ghost.
The Goldfinch
by Donna Tartt
This book follows two boys as they go through everything that life could through at them together. It is about love, pain, loss, and death. It brings up that and more in every possible philosophical way. It’s everything a great book needs.
